I now wish I had paid a lot more attention in my English lessons at school, but grammar and spelling were so boring – but now they are essential skills in the tool bag of the world we live in. Like it or not, one massive impact of the Internet is that it is turning us all into writers, authors and diarists.
For many of us, the Internet was a source of information, like a book. Websites were online brochures and you could choose to have a one way engagement. How things have changed. If you are serious about promoting your business, your products or services and indeed yourself, then the Internet is the place to do it. Use it as a voice piece to communicate to the world.
The Internet provides a voice to the masses - it has become a multimedia medium rich in content. More than that, it is a huge publishing medium for you to get your message across. There are many ways
• Website – an effective written website can make the difference in getting your messages across
• Blogging – have your own personal blog, your business blog, blog on other peoples / sites blogs
• Articles – publish articles on your site, submit to other article aggregation sites
• Comment – write comments on what others have written; instigate debate
• Share – see something you like – vote it, bookmark it on delicious, add to other social media sites
• Micro Blogging – quick fire comments and opinions such as Twitter
For all these, it is important you can communicate with the written word. As with most things, we have two options; we get someone else to do it ... or we do it ourselves.
If we take the latter option, the doing it ourselves involves investing time in thought and planning. For it to be impactful and effective it involves good writing skills, correct grammar and accurate spelling.
So, if you are to really grab the opportunity that the Internet offers then embrace the written word, dust of the English books, look up grammar checking sites, turn on the spellchecker and get your story out there.
